Welcome to the Association for the Blind of WA – Guide Dogs WA

Our Board

The Association's Board of Directors is elected by the Members of the Association. Members include clients, families and carers of clients, donors and interested members of the public.

Debbie Schaffer (President)
Debbie Schaffer has been a member of the Board since 2006 and was elected as President in 2009. Debbie and her family have been generous benefactors to the Association and she took on a very significant role on the Major Gifts Committee of the Association's ‘Building our Vision Campaign'. Debbie has also been actively involved in the Ear Science Institute Capital Campaign and to date has provided leadership in raising $8 million for the development of a new Ear Science Institute. Debbie is a Director of the Schaffer Group of Companies.

 David Craig  

David Craig
David Craig is a Company Director. David has been a diligent member of the Finance and Audit Committee for 12 years and was Chairman of the Board of Christchurch College.

Peter Hickson

 

Peter Hickson
Peter Joined the Board in 2003 and is Director of Spices Catering. Peter is also a member of the Finance and Audit Committee.

 Greg Madson  

Greg Madson
Greg Madson has served as a Director of Blind Citizens Australia and president of Blind Citizens WA for the past eight years. He has been employed at the University of WA and has developed an extensive knowledge of information technology.

 David Bevan  

David Bevan
David Bevan has over 21 years experience in the development and growth of businesses in the human resource and human services sector. He was the Managing Director of PVS Workfind, one of Australia's leading and most successful employment service providers, for 14 years.

 Dean Pike

Dean Pike
Dean Pike is a founding partner of Pike & Skinner and has been in public practice for over 18 years.

Helen Smith is Director of Operations and Consultant of Perihelion Health Pty Ltd, Director and Company Secretary of the ESF (Australia) Pty Ltd and the Trustee for The Eye Surgery Foundation.

Dr Iain Murray

Dr Iain Murray
Dr Iain Murray is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Curtin University. Iain's research at Curtin involves development of assistive technology to facilitate learning and literacy for people who are blind and vision impaired. Iain is the founder of the Curtin University Centre for Accessible Technology (CUCAT).

Lana Thompson

Lana Thompson
Lana Thompson worked at a major stock firm in Perth prior to attending UWA gaining her Bachelor of Arts degree in  British History and English. Lana has been on a number of committees and executive bodies relating to the area of blind welfare. 

Lorraine Driscoll

  

Lorraine Driscoll
Lorraine Driscoll has proven experience and track record in senior executive positions. She has been General Manager, Strategy and Planning with Lotterywest since 2004 and is responsible for the development of effective business directions and strategies designed to improve or sustain Lotterywest business viability, brand identity and community profile.

Geoff Cowie

  

Geoff Cowie
Geoff Cowie has over 35 years experience in the fields of resource project management and construction contracting, and has worked on major resource development projects and studies in Australia, China, Bulgaria, India and Africa. Geoff is currently a Project Director at Calibre, an Australian-based, international provider of project management, engineering and consultancy services to the resources and infrastructure industries.

Harry Kleyn

Harry Kleyn
Harry Kleyn was the Founder and Publisher of WA Business News from 1993 - 2010. He has had a successful executive career in media, rural enterprises, property, building and construction and non-executive experience in the fields of education, aged care, media and business advocacy.

David Ligovitch

David Ligovich (Co-opted)
David Ligovich is currently the Chief Financial Officer of HBF Health Insurance. As a Chartered Accountant with over 25 years experience, 11 years internationally with multi-national and global organisations, he has held a variety of responsibilities and roles including Auditor (external and internal), Financial Controller and Chief Financial Officer.

Consumer Advisory Committee

The Consumer Advisory Committee is a Committee of the Board. It meets quarterly and consists of people who are blind or vision impaired and/or their carers. The role of the Committee is to:

  • Comment and advise on policy issues relating to the Association's services and where appropriate make recommendations to the Board on these issues
  • Comment on service policy issues referred by the Management of the Association
  • Bring to the attention of the management and/or Board any issues which affect the quality of life of people with a vision impairment
  • Review on an annual basis the use and operation of the Association's grievance procedures; recommend changes to these procedures that may improve their effectiveness in resolving consumer's grievances
  • Advise on the need for the introduction of new services.
