Welcome to the Association for the Blind of WA – Guide Dogs WA

Corinne Climbs Mount Everest

Corinne Caldwell with Guide Dog Pup at Open Day 2011This month, Corinne Caldwell, Finance Manager at the Association for the Blind of WA, and her partner Adam are preparing for a gruelling 19 day hike to reach the Mount Everest Base Camp at 5,364m above sea level.

Throughout their journey Corinne and Adam are raising money for an amazing cause - Guide Dogs WA. Corinne explains why they chose to donate to the Association.

‘Dogs are very close to our hearts and it's always amazing to see these wonderful, intelligent animals helping a blind or vision impaired person in a special way.'

‘We want the funds from our feat to go to purchasing some essential equipment for Guide Dogs-in-training.'

Climbing Mount Everest was something Corinne and Adam had planned to do but for the last couple of years there were always other things going on.

We spoke to Corinne about her previous hiking achievements.

‘I started hiking when I was 16, I did the Nijmegen March as part of the Canadian contingent - it's a 40km a day for 4 days walk through Holland. I did about 15,000 training kms for that and loved it and after that I was always off climbing somewhere or other.'

‘I have hiked Mt. Kilimanjaro (Tanzania - highest in Africa), Scar Fell (England, highest in UK), did some of Aconcagua (Argentina), Macchu Picchu (Peru) and a lot of the mountains in North America, the French and Italian alps,' said Corinne.

Corinne tells us about her heavy training resume in preparation for the climb.

‘I started from a reasonably good physical position. I have been doing heavy training since December 2011. Now I am into the last six weeks so I train five times a week. I do 40 minutes of cardio in the morning and 60 minutes of weights and cardio in the evening sometimes followed by a 5-10km walk. Then on the weekend I hike about 20kms with 15kgs in my bag.'

‘There is something beautiful and very serene about sitting on some of the highest faces of the world and looking out. Few people can get there so the people you meet are generally really interesting and the local customs and cultures have always fascinated me.'

Corinne and Adam leave on 21 March 2012 and begin their journey a few days later.
