On Friday 3 February two chocolate Labrador puppies entered the Guide Dogs WA Program to begin their training.
We spoke to Phil Stanley, Senior Guide Dog Instructor, who was eagerly anticipating the two 8-week-old-pups' entry into the Program.
‘In my time here, Guide Dogs WA has had only black and yellow Labradors. These chocolate puppies are less common and have caused quite a stir in the community,' said Phil.
‘Our latest recruits were carefully selected by the team. Guide Dog puppies must be confident, responsive and healthy - the qualities of a successful Guide Dog.'

‘Labradors are ideal Guide Dogs because they have a placid temperament, are eager to please, are easy to care for, come in a variety of sizes and are intelligent and highly trainable.'
‘Each year thousands of Western Australians are diagnosed with blindness or vision impairment. As a result, our Guide Dog program needs to grow, and grow fast. These two pups are part of a group of 10 who will begin training between 1 January and 30 June this year.'
‘These two very special chocolate puppies will one day have the chance to give two people in WA a happier, healthier, more independent life.'
