Guide Dogs
The Association for the Blind of WA – Guide Dogs WA is the principal provider of Guide Dogs in Western Australia.
Our Guide Dog Program
For most people, sight is the most dominant sense. It’s the most important source of information about the world we live in. We provide a range of services designed to build confidence in orientation and mobility. This includes learning to read sounds and environmental clues using a white cane and our very special Guide Dog Program.
A Guide Dog can have a profound impact on the confidence of a person living with blindness and open up a whole new world of independence.
- Western Australia is the traditional home of Guide Dogs in Australia. It was blind yet visionary Western Australian Arnold Cook, who brought Guide Dogs to Australia for the very first time
- The Association is a member of the International Guide Dog Federation
- We rely totally on the generosity of the community, individuals, families and businesses to fund our Guide Dog Program
- It costs more than $30,000 to train each Guide Dog. To ensure fair access for all, our Guide Dogs service is provided free of charge to people who are blind or severely vision impaired.
Guide Dog Facts
- It is important not to distract a Guide Dog while in harness. Always ask a Guide Dog Owner before saying hello to their companion
- Guide Dogs are only working when in harness, out of harness they can play and behave like any other (well trained) pet dog
- By law, Guide Dogs can go anywhere their Guide Dog owner can. The only exceptions are zoos and operating theatres. These conditions are set by government legislation and people who don't comply face tough fines.
