People with vision loss who are seeking full or part-time work can access a range of services to assist with the process.
Our Vocational Advocacy Officer can provide a list of employment service providers in your area, and can help you if you have difficulty following the job seeking process and gaining access to an employment service.
JobAccess Service
Free expert help is available through the JobAccess service. Alternatively you can call 1800 464 800 and speak to a JobAccess advisor. This is a free and confidential service.
Job Seeking Process
Job seeking assistance is provided by Disability Employment Services (DES). DES providers are located throughout Western Australia, and some specialise in helping people with vision loss.
Job seekers can approach a DES provider directly for services. In most cases, the provider will refer you for a job capacity assessment to determine your eligibility for the disability employment service. You can also contact your local Centrelink office to arrange a job capacity assessment and referral to a DES provider.
The DES will help you to develop a pathway to employment that may include further education, training, rehabilitation services, work experience, job search and job placement assistance.
Employment Assistance Fund
While you are job seeking, your DES provider will work with potential employers to make sure that any modifications that need to be made to the workplace are provided. This includes provision of assistive technology devices such as computer software, magnification devices, telephonic devices and physical modifications such as workstations, lighting, etc.
Workplace modifications are provided by the Australian Government and are not paid for by the employer.
Further information about the Employment Assistance Fund is available from the JobAccess website or a JobAccess advisor.
