Training and Skill Development
Our Industry Skills Centre provides a supported training environment for people who are blind or vision impaired.
We have:
- Dedicated and highly qualified trainers
- Small classes where students receive individual support and help
- Equipment that has been enhanced with assistive technology, designed both for the work and home.

Braille for People who are Blind or Vision Impaired
Whether you are a new Braille learner or a skilled Braille user, the Centre offers a range of classes to enable you to develop and maintain your Braille skills.
Classes are available for beginners at Grade 1 level, with the opportunity to continue into Grade 2 level. If you have completed Grade 2, reading classes are available to help maintain and develop your skills.
Braille for People who are Sighted
This course is designed for people who are sighted who want to become volunteer Braille transcribers for the Association. It may also suit parents and teachers of children with vision impairment. The course focuses on production of Braille materials using the Duxbury Braille translation program.
Certificate I in Information Technology ICA10105
The Certificate I in Information Technology can be used to seek entry level employment or as a foundation course for further study. It is also a useful course to improve or consolidate general computing skills. The course covers:
- Keyboard skills
- Computer operation
- Word processing
- Developing internet and email skills.
Certificate III in Business BSB30107
The Certificate III in Business can be used to seek employment in an administration or support services role, or as a foundation course for further study. The course covers:
- Advanced word processing
- Spreadsheets
- Databases
- Organisation of workplace information
- Teamwork
- Customer service
- Personal development skills.
Cisco Academy
Cisco qualifications are recognised throughout the world and can lead to employment in the information technology industry. They can be obtained using a mixture of online and practical resources provided by the Cisco Academy. All resources are accessible to people with vision impairment.
Students may choose to study in a classroom environment supported by a qualified Cisco instructor or study externally. Students choosing the external study option will need appropriate technology to access the course materials.
Assistive Technology Workshops
The Industry Skills Centre offers short half or full day workshops in specific skill areas in response to requests and identified needs of Association clients. These include workshops in using JAWS, ZoomText, email, internet and general computer security, operation, and maintenance.
