Vale Dixie Gunning, OAM

In June 2020 Guide Dogs WA lost a good friend and long-time supporter in Ms Dixie Gunning.

Dixie had a long association with the (then) Association for the Blind, the Guide Dogs for the Blind Committee and more recently Guide Dogs WA. Over many decades Dixie was an ardent supporter and many clients, volunteers, donors, friends and staff would remember her passion for the work of the organisation.

Serving as President of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Committee, Dixie ran the long standing annual Guide Dog Art Show. The annual art shows were quite prestigious and a highlight of the calendar. Exhibiting artists would donate work to be sold during the exhibition. The posters from many of these Art Shows (created by design students) are still hanging today in the corridors of our Perron Centre building in Victoria Park.

The funds raised at these enormously successful shows and other fundraising events allowed the organisation to provide a comprehensive range of support services to Western Australians living with blindness and low vision.

Dixie was given life membership of the Association in 1988 in recognition of her fundraising work and support of the organisation. She was a good friend to many.

Management and staff at VisAbility and Guide Dogs WA offer their deepest sympathy to Dixie’s sons and family. She was a passionate supporter and advocate who will be sadly missed.
