Winston, our beloved facility dog at Perth Children’s Court, has officially retired on 28 October 2025 after four remarkable years of service as a Facility Dog. His farewell celebration was a heartwarming event at the Court and attended by members of staff from Guide Dogs WA and the Department of Justice.

It was a truly moving event that highlighted the profound impact Winston has had on children and families navigating the justice system, as well as the staff who work there.

Winston was born on 6 September 2016 in sunny Queensland at Guide Dogs Queensland. His proud parents were Dam: Guiding light Netty and Sire: Guiding light Perkins. With a family tree full of distinguished working dogs, Winston was destined for greatness.

He made his way to Western Australia from Queensland when he was just 8 weeks old.

Like many modern professionals, Winston has had a varied career. He started out as a Guide Dog, a role he carried out with dedication for 19 months. Through no fault of his own, Winston found himself “redundant” from his first job—proof that even the best of us face career pivots!

Winston went back to school here in WA, retraining for a new role. The team at Guide Dogs WA quickly realised Winston had something special: a heart full of love, a tail that wagged like a metronome of joy, and a bottom wiggle that could brighten anyone’s day.

In 2021, Winston began his new chapter at the Children’s Court, becoming Guide Dogs WA’s very first Facility Dog. Over the years, he’s supported countless children and families through tough times—offering a loving wag, pressure therapy, or simply being a non-judgemental listener with soulful eyes and a calming presence.

He’s been a source of strength, joy, and unconditional love to so many. But now, it’s time for Winston to hang up his coat and enjoy the retirement he so richly deserves—filled with naps, treats, and leisurely strolls.

The support that Winston provided will continue at Perth Children’s Court through the work of Millie and Perron, and their handlers.

Winston’s legacy is a powerful reminder of the difference our work makes in people’s lives. Enjoy your retirement.
